Morning Sickness

Ugh… having to deal with morning sickness throughout my entire pregnancy was hideous. I really thought being nauseated was something that only happened during the first trimester, but boy was I wrong. Ok I’m exaggerating a little bit, I didn’t have it in the first 1 - 4 weeks of pregnancy nor at the very end. I was put off but a lot of food, meat was the one food I couldn’t even stand the sight of even the smell of it cooking made by dry heave.

Having twins can make pregnancy nausea more probable though I’m sure there will still be those lucky few who breeze through their pregnancy without any sign of sickness. So I’m going talk a bit about the symptoms, causes and treatments of morning sickness and I wish you all luck in feeling much better soon


Symptoms of Morning Sickness

Feeling sick during pregnancy is very common and though some will actually vomit many will just feel nauseated without any vomiting. There are some causes of concern and you will need to see the doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • If the nausea or vomiting is serve, especially with vomiting this could result in both you and babies not getting  the required nutrients you both need for a healthy pregnancy.
  • If you can’t keep any liquids down, dehydration is bad for anyone but can actual cause preterm labor.
  • There is blood in your vomit.
  • You feel dizzy often when you stand up.

Causes

To be honest within the medical profession they aren’t really sure why women feel sick during pregnancy. But there a few theories floating around:

  • Vitamin Deficiency – Specifically B6 and B12
  • The hormone hCG is probably the most common theory. They say because in the first trimester the level of this hormone quickly rises this could be one of the main causes.
  • Low blood sugar is not really a cause as such but eating more frequently throughout the day can help with low blood sugar levels and morning sickness.

Treatments

Because there are no real concrete causes, there is truly no treatment but defiantly things you can do to ease it up a bit with different things working better than others, it all depends on you and how your body works:

  • Ginger can help any type of nausea, you can have it in the form of tea, biscuits, ginger drops or ginger beer.
  • Vitamins can help, as mentioned before B6 and B12 including a prenatal vitamin, B12 actually helps with stress and anxiety to which can heighten your nausea during pregnancy.
  • Dry crackers, which you can keep next to your bedside or hand bag just in case. Having something in your stomach can really help.
  • Acupuncture is said to be very helpful. Studies have shown this type of treatment to be safe during pregnancy. It’s actually becoming quite of a popular alternative therapy.
